Various Table Settings

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

What’s there to say? Miami Mandarin Oriental is a super awesome location! I’ve had the opportunity to photograph a number of linen table settings put up by Pablo from Nuage Designs for weddings. That guy is super talented.

Another reason why I love Mandarin Oriental is because it’s right next to the water. The reflection from the afternoon sun makes all of the china, flutes, goblets, etc. sparkle. Definitely pretty neat.

P.S. I’m from Los Angeles. So, the first time I touched the ocean waters in Miami, I sort of freaked out! It’s warm like a bath tub. So nice.

So…today was rather exciting!

I did my normal routine of going to a coffee shop (today was Panera Bread) to work. After I had a delicious sandwich and a bowl of soup for lunch, I just remembered that Grace Ormonde’s new Spring / Summer magazine issue should be in the newsstands.

I did know that my hilarious ad (page 166) was going to be in there, so I decided to visit Borders to see if the magazine has arrived on the shelf.

Upon first glance, I did not expect my photos to be the opening spread to the tabletop section!!! I knew that I will get a copy of the magazine in the mail since I have her subscription, but I JUST HAD TO BUY IT right then and there.

I’m humbled beyond words. I’ve been published a number of times before but first time by Grace Ormonde.

Thanks Grace and Yanni,

Lawrence Chan

P.S. Hope you two are having a wonderful time in Cap Juluca, Anguilla! I am going to shoot a wedding there one day and will be sure to submit it!

Trash The Dress: Tiffany and Le

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

The original plan after the wedding in Cancun Casa Magna was to go to Tulum Ruins, Mexico to conduct a Trash The Dress (TTD) session. Unfortunately, when we got there, the security was not very flexible and would not permit photos. Boo on them.

Being the tenacious person I am, I cajoled two locals to take us on boats to go around the ruins and shoot from behind. Surprisingly, the photos in the water turned out to be WAY BETTER than anticipated!

The only downside to doing this was the ocean water washed all of Le’s sunblock off and he got burnt by the end of our session. What a trooper! On the bright side, Le looks like The Most Interesting Man in the World (by Dos Equis).

Got to love the turquoise water!

This was funny. A group of Italian tourists were so impressed with the lighting gear that we brought that they thought Tiffany and Le were supermodels. Personally, I think the two of them should be (even though practicing marketing and medicine are fun too…I guess).

Anyway, the tourists took out their cameras and started photographing us at work. Then shyly got closer and started photographing them. I just told them with my limited Italian (which is a vocabulary of three words) to sit down and take a photo with the “supermodels.” They were so stoked.

This photo is one of my favorites. In fact, I have a large canvas of this image. It wasn’t even intentional. Tiffany was walking alone while Le was putting on some sunblock and a gust of wind blew her veil. Luckily, I had my telephoto lens, which created the beautiful blur.

They look good in white, huh?

Whew! What a wonderful time in Cancun! Love it there!

P.S. In the first few photos, two boats were used to make the shots. I was in the other one with a telephoto lens. With the rocking waters coupled with looking through a tiny peephole, the shoot lasted no more than 10 minutes because I started vomiting like a hose. Free fish food?

The following is a new video I made of some of my weddings. You’ll see some clips of the shoot here.

P.P.S. Yes, I bring a butt load of lighting gear sometimes even for a destination wedding.

Wedding: Tiffany and Le

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

What can I say about Mexico? I love it there – food is great, conversion rate is awesome, turquoise water is incomparable.

I already knew that it was going to be an beautiful wedding simply because Tiffany has really good taste. When I photographed their engagement session in New York, the two of them were wearing stunning ensembles – designer labels coupled with sexy smiles. Even if I was out of focus, the photos still came out nice.

What was truly beautiful was the chemistry between the Tiffany and Le. She knew exactly what to say to bring out the fun side in Le. This included innocuous teasing of Le’s infatuation for wearing super low cut socks, which wasn’t exactly appealing in photos when his bare leg was exposed.

*** skip a few months into the wedding

Tiffany couldn’t have picked a better time to have the wedding…except for the short period of super winds. You’ll see in the photos.

And the winds began. Note that Tiffany had her hair curled.

Hair’s not so curly anymore, huh? The wind-spell was so strong that I could barely keep my eyes open haha! They’re such troopers.

That was a fun trip! The remainder of the evening was filled with liquor, dancing and laughs. We all slept in because the next day was our TTD (Trash The Dress) session!

Adios,

Lawrence Chan

P.S. It sounds cliched, but I always have to get a taco in Mexico…and a Corona.

The Plaza New York and Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

“If this goes through, Lawrence, I guess they’ll have to shave a few hours from afternoon tea,” giggled Grace.

The air was filled with romance drawn from scenes of The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and other Greats walking through the same opulent lobby. The Plaza Hotel is the quintessence of elegance, which was the perfect pairing for Wedding Style Magazine’s New York party on October 15, 2010.

Ed Libby tweeted, “The who’s who of what’s what in NYC are here!!” I couldn’t agree more – I did a lot of gawking, stalking, and paparazzi-style shooting. Overall, I am humbled and honored that I had the opportunity to partake on this memorable event at such a landmark location.

“I have never seen the Palm Court look so sexy,” was Grace’s opening line. And it was welcomed with unanimous laughter.

Others who attended included Colin Cowie, Reem Acra, Ines Di Santo… I was a little star-struck to say the least. Unfortunately, I did not get photos of everyone. It was probably because I was eating…yummy!

The evening proceeded with lots of wine and wonderful conversations. The next morning, I decided to do a little pigeon feeding and HDR fun. Since the Apple store was not too far from The Plaza, I couldn’t resist.

Afterward, Yanni, Grace, Tracy, Mike and I went to a few fashion shows for Bridal Market. That was fun!

Yours truly,

Lawrence Chan

P.S. I have been to New York over a dozen times now and I keep FORGETTING to eat a street vendor hot dog!! Until next time…
